What Can I Line My Bureau Drawers With?

Lining your bureau drawers will provide barriers between the bottoms of the drawers and the items inside. The barriers allow you to keep new drawers protected or use old drawers without worrying about them damaging what you store in them. Homeowners have been using a variety of materials to line drawers for years and many more options exist with modern materials.
  1. Gift Wrapping

    • Gift wrap makes and inexpensive and readily available drawer lining material. Cut sheets of gift wrap to fit into the bottom of each drawer. In addition to the protection the paper offers, the printed designs give each drawer a bit of style. Switch up designs for a bit of variety or stick to a single design that fits the rest of the decor in the room. To make the paper stick better in the bottom of the drawer, strips of double-sided tape can offer a strong grip. For a more permanent liner, large strips of clear tape can essentially seal the paper in place without covering the design.

    Wallpaper

    • Wallpaper is thicker than most other papers, allowing it to stay place in a drawer for years while enduring daily use without ripping and wrinkling. Wallpaper should not be pre-pasted, as the paste can activate or leave chemicals in the wood or on clothing items. Paste-free wallpaper, however, can be cut to size and placed in the bottom of the drawer with little or no need for adhesive due to the sturdiness of the paper. Use leftover wallpaper from a recent project or grab some free samples from a home improvement store when old designs are discontinued.

    Contact Paper

    • Contact paper provides a permanent layer of lining inside bureau drawers. Its wipeable surface makes your bureau drawers stain and moisture resistant. Applying the contact paper involves cutting it to the correct size and shape and smoothing it over the bottom of the drawer. Several designs and solid colors are available at craft stores, online and in office supply or home goods stores. Choose a few different designs or use one roll to make all of your drawers match.

    Old Posters and Magazine Pages

    • Glossy paper usually cannot be recycled with other types of paper, but you can reuse glossy paper, such as that from old posters or magazine pages to avoid tossing them into the trash. Line your drawers with the pages of a magazine or portions of a large poster. Keep the paper in place with double-sided tape or a light layer of spray adhesive to protect your clothing from snags and oily wood stain.
