How to Cover Canvas

For boats and RVs with canvas covers, cover and store the canvas when it's not in use to prevent mold from growing and the canvas from discoloring or cracking from salt or sun. Canvas paintings or photo canvases must be covered when not displayed to protect them from moisture and direct sunlight. Covering the canvas in both instances will prolong its life and keep it looking like new for much longer. Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations for covering and storage if they differ from these instructions.

Instructions

  1. Furniture Canvas

    • 1

Clean the canvas with a mild detergent and a soft-bristle brush before storing. Rinse the canvas with a hose until the water runs clean.

    • 2

Wait for the canvas to dry for 24 hours or until completely dry before attempting to store it.

    • 3

Remove the canvas from the boat and fold it up as small as possible. Store the canvas in a separate canvas bag in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and moisture.

    Picture Canvas

    • 4

Remove dust from the canvas with a soft-bristle brush before covering.

    • 5

Cover the canvas in a soft cotton cloth to prevent exposure to dust and sunlight.

    • 6

Place the canvas in a cool, dry location away from the sun, such as a dry closet or other area that will not receive direct sunlight. This will prevent the canvas from discoloring or fading in the sun, as well as protect it from dirt and other contaminants.
