How to Polish Felts

Felt is not a common material to use on furniture or table tops. So the idea of polishing or cleaning felt to pristine condition doesn't generally come up too often. The most common place you will find a surface made of felt is in a casino, for example on the poker table, or on a billiards table. If you have created a home casino or own a billiards table and you want to clean your felt and create a clean, polished surface, free of the dust and chalk that can build up, take these steps.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Use a nylon brush to sweep any dust and debris from the corners of the table and any hard-to-reach areas where it may have accumulated. Brush it into the center of the table, where it can be easily vacuumed and removed. A nylon brush is suitable, because the bristles are strong and won't fall onto the table and add to the mess.

    • 2

Vacuum the table using a hand-held vacuum cleaner. Make sure it is powerful enough to suck up all of the dirt and debris, and gradually work your way around the table ensuring that you don't leave any dust ahead of the next phase of cleaning.

    • 3

Dip a soft cloth into damp water and use gradual circular motions on any areas of stains of dirt. You will require patience for this, as any cleaning products would fade the color of the felt; instead, you must rub gradually, and you will see the stain gradually fade without losing the luster of the felt.

Spray some wood polish onto a new, clean cloth and rub the surrounding areas of the felt. Invariably, felt tables -- gambling or billiards -- have wood railings around them, so having that surface nicely polished will compliment the polished cleaning job which you have done on the felt.
