How to Clean a Chenille Upholstered Cushion

Upholstered furniture with a chenille cushion requires delicate care to protect the finish of the cushion, as chenille is prone to fading and damage because of the delicacy of the fabric. While some chenille cushion labels display an "X" indicating that the cushion requires professional care to safely clean the fabric, some chenille upholstery is suitable for gentle at-home cleaning that maintains the fabric's condition. As with any upholstered furniture, refer to the fabric label to determine proper cleaning techniques to reduce the risk of damage.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush the chenille cushion gently with the hairbrush in the direction of the nap, which is indicated by a smooth, flat surface, to remove surface debris.

    • 2

Pour 1 tsp. of upholstery shampoo into a small bowl, and mix with 1 quart of water. Thoroughly mix the ingredients, and scoop the foam from the shampoo onto a clean cotton cloth.

    • 3

Blot the stain gently with the cloth on the cushion. Do not rub, as this will damage the fabric and can set in the stain.

    • 4

Wait for the upholstery shampoo to become powdery, and gently brush the powdery residue with the hairbrush to remove it.

    • 5

Wet a new cloth with cool water, and rinse the stain with the cloth.

    • 6

Leave the upholstered cushion outside to allow it to air dry, although do not place the cushion in direct sunlight as the light can damage the fabric.
