How to Get Spots Out of Velvet

Velvet is known for its soft and luxurious-feeling material that must be treated with care and consideration. Many people like to entertain their guests on their velvet couch since it is a comfortable place to sit and chat while enjoying a snack or beverage. This puts the velvet at great risk of becoming spotted. When you notice spots on your velvet couch, take action as soon as possible to avoid giving the stains enough time to sit.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the seat cushions and look for the care label and instructions. Use the care label to identify the type of velvet your couch is made from and if self-cleaning the velvet is an option. Only continue if the care label does not object to self-cleaning methods.

    • 2

Vacuum the couch to remove any hair or lint. This gives you a fresh area to clean so you are actually cleaning the couch instead of the debris covering the surface.

    • 3

Apply a water-based furniture cleaning solution on a small hidden area of the couch to test for discoloration. If the cleaning solution discolors the couch, spot-test other products until you find the one that works and does not affect the color of the couch.

Apply the cleaning solution to the spots on your couch and gently scrub the spotted area with a soft-bristled scrub brush, working in the direction of the nap.
