Natural Methods to Prevent Moths in Upholstered Furniture

Moths are known for causing damage to clothing, fabric and upholstery -- especially items stored in attics, basements or storage units. While moth balls and insecticides can be useful in preventing and getting rid of moths, they contain chemicals that are often not safe for kids, pets and, sometimes, the fabric or upholstery. There are a few natural methods you can use to stop moths from taking up residence in your upholstery.
  1. Vacuum Regularly

    • One of the simplest, most effective ways to prevent moths in upholstery is to vacuum the upholstery thoroughly and often. This will remove any existing eggs or larvae before damage occurs. Vacuuming also removes dust and hair, which moth larvae eat, and therefore, moths will not be likely to inhabit the area. Vacuum under furniture and along baseboards as well; moths prefer areas that do not get as much traffic, use or attention. Empty the vacuum and dispose of the contents immediately, in case moth eggs or larvae are present.

    Remove Pet Hair

    • Pet hair is a major food source for moth larvae. If you have pets, it is necessary to vacuum more frequently than you would if you were a person without pets. There are vacuums available with attachments that are especially designed for picking up pet hair, which may make clean up easier.

    Clean Storage Areas

    • It's easy to forget about upholstery pieces that are in storage, but it is just as necessary to clean them routinely. Whether these pieces are being stored in your basement, attic or elsewhere, remember to regularly clean the entire storage area as well as the upholstery pieces. Cedar is well-known for its natural moth-repelling quality. Use cedar balls or create a cedar-lined storage space to keep moths at bay.

    General Housekeeping

    • Keeping a clean house is the first defense to preventing moths as well as other critters. Vacuuming upholstery is the best way to prevent moths, but you can also make sure things are picked up and put away so you don't give moths the chance to hide and multiply where you can't see them. This goes for closets as well; clean out and vacuum closets at least every few months.
