How to Keep a Couch From Wear

Grandma covered her sofa in plastic and now you are just as desperate as she to preserve that expensive couch so it lasts for years. Fortunately, you don't have to resort to a plastic slip cover. Rather, make a few changes to your sofa and adopt a couple good habits and you should minimize the wear and tear on the sofa and make it last longer than it would have otherwise.

Instructions

    • 1

Flip the bottom and back cushions over every two weeks to even out the wear. Also, rotate the cushions so they are in different spots on the sofa. Different spots on the couch may get used more often than other spots.

    • 2

Move the couch to a different location in the room where it may get less use or people may sit in different spots. If possible, move the sofa out of the sun where it is likely to fade.

    • 3

Arrange throw pillows in front of the back cushions. This helps keep the back cushions from as much wear. Also, place cushions on the sides, next to each sofa arm. The pillows will endure some of the wear rather than the couch arms .

    • 4

Throw a blanket across the back or on the side arms. You can easily wash the blanket as it gets dirty from wear. A blanket can also help shade sections of the couch that are in the sun.

    • 5

Cover the sofa with a fabric slip cover, which are washable and can be replaced for less money than a couch.

    • 6

Encourage people -- including children -- not to flop on the sofa. Sit down gently so you don't damage the sofa.

    • 7

Keep animals off of the couch. Instead, buy a pet bed to sit next to the couch. Or, fold a blanket and place it on the couch and train your pet only to sit on the blanket.
