How to Reduce Static on Suede Couches

If you have a favorite couch that is soft to the touch and has a smooth, rich appearance, your couch may be covered in suede material. Micro-suede is another popular type of upholstery for couches as well due to its resistance to stains and comfort. One problem that you may encounter with suede or micro-suede couches is the accumulation of static electricity. The transfer of electrons from one surface to another is responsible for the static crackle and pop that you hear and feel when touching certain suede sofas. You can remedy this problem through multiple strategies.

Instructions

    • 1

Rub a dryer sheet over your suede couch. Dryer sheets, which help to reduce static electricity in clothing, also help to reduce static when rubbed on other surfaces as well.

    • 2

Spray your couch lightly with a static reducing spray, which you can usually find in the laundry section of your local supermarket.

    • 3

Place a cotton slip cover over your couch. Cotton is a fiber that is more resistant to static.

    • 4

Wear clothing made of natural materials such as cotton. When you sit on the sofa, natural fibers are less likely to spark a static reaction.

    • 5

Moisten the air in the room with a humidifier. If you don't have a humidifier, boil a pot of water on your stove if your kitchen is close to the room that houses the couch. Humid air conducts static electricity much less frequently than dry air.
