How to Care for an Italian Leather Couch

Place your sofa where it's not in direct sunlight. Keep shades or blinds drawn when the sun will be beating right on the sofa. If the leather is exposed to excessive sunlight, the color may fade or the leather can crack. Also keep the sofa away from direct sources of heat.

Keep a moderate humidity level in your home. Too much humidity can cause the leather to crack and may also increase the chances of mold growth.

Dust the leather sofa weekly with a soft cloth or a soft brush vacuum cleaner attachment hose. Make sure to dust in the crevices of the leather as well.

Clean the leather at least once a month with saddle soap and a soft cloth. Mix the saddle soap according to the manufacturer's instructions. Dampen a soft cloth with the soapy water and wipe down the entire sofa, including in the crevices of the leather. If the sofa needs cleaning more often, clean it with a soft cloth moistened with plain water.

Keep newspapers, magazines and sharp objects off of the leather sofa. Sharp objects and pet nails can make scratches or tears in the upholstery. Newspapers or magazines left to sit on the leather can leave ink stains.

Flip and fluff detachable cushions on the sofa periodically. This will help to ensure even wear on the leather and minimize wrinkles that may form.

Blot up spills and liquid from the leather promptly using a soft cloth. Avoid rubbing or you may spread the liquid further.

Conditioner the leather every 6 to 12 months with a high-quality leather conditioner. Rub the conditioner into the leather using small, circular motions and a soft cloth. The conditioner helps to keep the leather supple, as well as protect it from stains and spills.
