How to Keep a Red and White Chenille Bedspread From Fading

A sumptuous chenille bedspread with a striking red-and-white color contrast is a valuable household item, and one that is well worth preserving. There are several steps you can take to prevent the colors from fading and help your bedspread last a long time.

Take care in positioning your bed. To prevent your bedspread from fading, position your bed so that it never has direct sunlight hitting it. Harsh sunlight causes noticeable fading in fabrics.

    • 2

Install opaque curtains over all or part of any windows that allow light to hit the bedspread. If some sunlight hitting your bedspread through the windows is inevitable, opaque curtains will shield the fabric. You may only need to curtain the window part of the day, when sunbeams are hitting the bed directly.

Remove dust from the bedspread regularly. Some fabric-color fading occurs because of sun exposure, but much color change can come from dust buildup. Shake out your bedspread weekly to release the dust. Using the brush attachment of a handheld vacuum will also help remove dust.

    • 4

Flip your bedspread regularly. Do not have just one side exposed to light and air. Turn the bedspread often, letting the opposite side face out. Flip it vertically as well, so that all parts of it get equal exposure. Any color changes that do occur over the years will then be uniform and much less noticeable.

Use your chenille bedspread for decoration and coverage only. Do not make a habit of lying or sitting on it while it's on the bed. The flattening and stretching of the fibers will contribute to wear and change the appearance of the fabric.
