Care of Microsuede Upholstery Fabric

Microsuede is a man-made fabric made from 100 percent polyester. Because it is soft like suede, pet friendly, easy to clean and maintain and much cheaper than other fabrics, it is often a top choice for upholstered furniture. As with any fabric, test cleaning products in an inconspicuous area, such as under a cushion or behind the furniture, to make sure they are safe for your microsuede upholstery.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep microsuede furniture out of direct sunlight, especially dark colored fabrics. It will fade over time if exposed to too much sunlight.

    • 2

Vacuum microsuede furniture frequently, about once a week. You can also brush dust and dirt away with a fabric or lint brush. Frequent vacuuming or brushing prevents dirt from embedding into the fabric. It also helps restore the fabric's soft nap.

    • 3

Blot up spills right away with white towels, rags or paper towels. Do not rub the spills to clean them up; that will only push the substance further into the fabric and spread the substance onto a wider area.

    • 4

Brush away food spills. Use the flat side of a knife to carefully scape off stuck-on food. Vacuum or brush the microsuede when finished. If any food remains, use a wet rag to blot it away. If there is a stain, proceed to the next step.

Treat stains according to their kind. Mix about 1 tsp. of microsuede-safe upholstery cleaner with 1 qt. of distilled water. Read the label for exact dilution rates. Wet a white rag with the cleaning solution and blot the stain away, starting with the outside edges first. For oil-based stains, use a squirt of dish detergent mixed with 1 qt. of distilled water and blot the stain away. Avoid rubbing, but if you must, rub in small circular motions. Pat the wet areas dry with a clean wet rag or towel when finished.
