How to Care for a Fine Leather Couch

A quality leather couch’s luxurious appearance brings grandeur to any home. Although stylish, leather couches require proper care to preserve their original beauty. Leather couches, as with all furnishings, inevitably accumulate dust and spills, which make even expensive leather visually unappealing. Exposure to heat, sunlight, harsh cleaners and excessive moisture essentially damages leather couches, marring the leather’s texture and appearance. Since quality leather couches are substantial investments, use proper cleaning techniques to ensure they provide decades of use.

Instructions

    • 1

Vacuum the entire leather upholstery with a vacuum attachment. Extract dust from all the seams and hidden areas under the cushions as well.

    • 2

Dampen a microfiber rag with distilled water. Wipe the entire surface of the leather upholstery to remove fingerprints and any remaining dust. Rinse the rag with fresh distilled water once the rag’s soft fibers accumulate grime.

    • 3

Inspect the couch for food and liquid stains. If the leather contains stains, promptly mix 1 teaspoon of mild facial cleanser with 1 teaspoon of distilled water in a plastic pail.

    • 4

Moisten another rag in the mild cleanser solution. Blot the stained leather with the cleanser solution until the stain dissolves.

    • 5

Dampen another rag in fresh distilled water. Blot the soapy residue off the leather, rinsing the couch thoroughly.

    • 6

Wipe the moist leather gently with a microfiber towel. Remove all moisture from the leather couch.
