How to Eradicate Cigarette Odor From Furniture

The smell of cigarette smoke easily becomes trapped in upholstered furniture. This odor will last for weeks after you have put the cigarette out and will continue to linger in the air whenever you disturb the furniture. Normal cleaners do little to eradicate the cigarette smell from furniture. Fortunately, a few inexpensive products that many homeowners keep in the pantry will help remove the smell.

Things You'll Need

  • White vinegar
  • Spray bottle
  • Baking soda
  • Vacuum
  • Upholstery attachment
  • Lint-free cloth

Instructions

    • 1

Start at the top of the furniture and mist the upholstery with pure white vinegar. Use a spray bottle to apply the vinegar.

    • 2

Continue misting the upholstery with the vinegar while moving downward. Allow the vinegar to dry on the upholstery.

    • 3

Cover the upholstery with baking soda, if the cigarette smell remains. Let the baking soda sit on the upholstery overnight.

    • 4

Vacuum the baking soda off the fabric. Use the upholstery attachment of the vacuum for easier removal.

    • 5

Repeat the process as needed until you have removed all traces of the cigarette smell.

    • 6

Dampen a lint-free cloth in white vinegar, and wipe wood furniture with the cloth. Let the vinegar dry on the wood.
