A Home Remedy to Get Rid of Pet Odor Inside of an Ottoman

Ottomans are a handy way to kick up your feet at the end of a long day. The low, upholstered stools are often placed near arm chairs or sofas, offering weary guests a place to rest their feet. However, their proximity to the ground also makes them a favorite resting spot for the family pet. Over time, exposure to pet fur and oils can leave a footstool with a decidedly earthy funk. Fortunately, there are a number of ordinary items that can be used to eliminate unwanted pet odors and keep the ottoman fresh and clean.
  1. Urine

    • From time to time, accidents happen, even to well trained pets. To remove the urine odor from upholstery, blot up any remaining fluid then sponge the affected area with a solution made from mixing 1 tsp. of liquid dishwashing detergent into 1 cup of warm water. Rinse the soap away by wiping the area with a cloth that has been dipped into white vinegar. Sprinkle borax over the damp fabric, wait 24 hours, then remove the powder with the vacuum cleaner.

    "Wet Dog"

    • While washing a dog does give a pooch’s pelt an instant pick-me-up, the distinct scent of “wet dog” can linger for hours. To help remove this unwelcome aroma from couches, footstools, bedding and carpets, combine ½ cup borax and 1 cup cornmeal, sprinkle the mixture over the affected items, wait one hour and then vacuum up.

    General Pet Odor

    • When the furniture begins to emit an unidentifiable, but plainly pet-based, odor, remove the smell by wiping down upholstery with a cloth that has been dipped in distilled white vinegar, then place the ottoman in front of an open window for several hours. The vinegar scent will dissipate over time, and the fresh air and sunlight will help eliminate any lingering aromas.

    Prevention

    • The best way to keep the ottoman from developing off-putting animal odors is to keep the pets from jumping on them. To keep Rover off the furniture, cover the cushions with sheets of aluminum foil. A few attempts to get comfy on the slippery, noisy surface will encourage him to sleep elsewhere.
