How to Care for an Antique Marble-Top Table

Antique marble-top tables add a classic, elegant touch to any room. The smooth marble top is often paired with a rich wooden base to provide a warmer aesthetic. Marble and wood require different care and cleaning methods to maintain their appearance. Marble can etch or dissolve when exposed to acidic materials, and wood requires deep cleaning to remove old dirt and wax buildup. Keep your antique marble-top table as dust-free and dry as possible, and clean it on a regular basis to remove buildup and restore shine.

Instructions

  1. Cleaning

    • 1

Fill a bucket with 1 gallon of warm water, and add 1 tbsp. of mild, non-lemon dish soap.

    • 2

Dip a sponge into the bucket, and wring it out.

    • 3

Wipe the antique table thoroughly with the sponge, avoiding any delicate metal trim. Rinse the sponge in the bucket as it gets dirty.

    • 4

Rinse the sponge with clean water, and wipe over the marble-top table to remove any soap residue. Dry the table thoroughly with a towel. If the marble shows minor scratches or etching, consider polishing the table.

    Polishing

Dampen the marble table top with a wet cloth.

    • 6

Sprinkle a thin, even layer of marble polishing powder onto the marble table top.

    • 7

Buff the marble table top with a clean, damp cloth until the etching or scratch marks are gone.

    • 8

Wipe away any debris with a clean, wet cloth. Dry the marble thoroughly with a towel.
