How to Care for a Leather Upholstered Sofa

The addition of a leather upholstered sofa to your room provides comfort and luxury. When you care for it properly, your leather sofa can last for years. Because leather is a natural material, it's affected by many of the same things that irritate our skin. Too much heat and not enough moisture can lead leather to dry out and crack. Caring for your leather sofa is simple, and you can keep it in tiptop condition with regular maintenance.

Instructions

    • 1

Position your leather upholstered sofa in an area of the room that doesn't receive direct sunlight. Make sure the sofa isn't sitting near heating vents that can cause the leather to dry out.

    • 2

Wipe dust off once each week with a dry microfiber cloth. Moisten the cloth with water to wipe off any fresh stains before drying the leather.

    • 3

Wash the leather upholstery once each month, using a saddle soap solution. Fill a bucket with 1 gallon of warm water. Add 2 capfuls of saddle soap to the water.

    • 4

Moisten a cloth with the saddle soap solution. Squeeze out all the excess moisture. Wipe the leather upholstery to remove stains, dirt and oil buildup. Rinse the leather with a moist cloth before drying the leather surface.

    • 5

Pour a quarter-sized amount of leather conditioner onto a clean cloth. Condition the leather after it's washed by buffing the upholstery with the leather conditioner. Add more conditioner to the cloth as needed to ensure that the entire surface is conditioned.

    • 6

Allow the conditioner to soak into the leather for 20 to 30 minutes. Wipe off any excess leather conditioner with a dry cloth.
