How to Get Water Out of Polyurethane Cushions

When polyurethane foam cushions get wet, try drying them before replacing them. You may save some money and a trip to the store. Of all the liquids that dampen sponge cushions, water has the least lingering aftereffects on this foam since it leaves no odor behind, although it may discolor the foam. With absorbent materials and a fan, you may be able to dry the foam before permanent damage occurs.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any upholstery covers. Many of the covers have zippers in the back you can unzip to pull the foam cushion out. If the covers cannot be unzipped, use a razor blade or sharp knife to loosen the covers to take out the cushion.

    • 2

Use a wet-dry vacuum to suck out as much water as you can. If you don't have a vacuum that can handle water, try to squeeze as much water out of the cushion as you can using your hands.

    • 3

Roll the cushion in dry beach towels. If you don't have any, choose the largest towels you have. Cotton blankets also absorb moisture easily if you do not have enough towels. If the cushions are too large to roll, place the towels or blanket on the cushions and using your hands, push down to wick some of the water away. Turn the cushion over and repeat the process.

    • 4

Place a fan in front of the cushion and turn it to medium or high to hasten the drying process. You can also use a hair dryer, but use care. If the foam gets too hot, it may deteriorate.

    • 5

Place the dry cushion back in the cover and zip it up. If your cover did not have a zipper, thread a needle with strong thread and stitch the seam you opened back up tightly, snipping the ends with a scissors.
