How to Dust a Maple Cabinet

Maple wood belongs in the hardwood category and offers a densely grained, durable surface. Cabinetmakers add wood stain to darken or enhance the natural amber color of maple and then apply a finish coat. Typically, the finish coat is either a soft oiled finish or a hard varnish, shellac, polyurethane or lacquer top coat. Dust removal techniques remain the same, regardless of the maple finish. Eliminating dust is necessary to prevent the dust from dulling the beauty of the cabinet.

Instructions

    • 1

Climb a step stool or small stepladder to access high, out-of-reach areas of the cabinet. Begin the dust removal process at the highest point of the maple cabinet to allow dust to fall to lower areas.

    • 2

Remove knickknacks, pictures, books or other items sitting on the maple cabinet and set them aside.

    • 3

Pull a feather duster, lamb's wool duster, electrostatic duster, microfiber rag or cotton cloth across the top of the maple cabinet. Begin at the top edge of the maple cabinet and move the duster over the wood, without lifting the duster off the surface, until you reach the opposite side. Turn the dusting cloths often to use a dust-free area of the rag. Repeat the dusting method across the top of the maple cabinet until all dust falls to the floor or lower surfaces of the cabinet or clings to the duster.

    • 4

Drag the duster from the top to the bottom of the maple cabinet, beginning on the side. Move to the front of the cabinet and the other side. Wipe the back of the cabinet with the duster using the same method if you have access to the back.

    • 5

Insert a cotton swab or the bristles of a soft paintbrush into small recesses and carvings, and move the cotton swab or paintbrush along to remove the dust. If the carvings are tiny and intricate, direct the spray from a can of compressed air into the recesses and blow the dust off the maple surface.

    • 6

Suck the dust off the floor's surface with a vacuum cleaner.
