How to Get Red Wine Off a Sofa

Stains from colored liquids such as red wine are among the most difficult to remove from fabric and upholstery. If you are able to treat the stain soon after it occurs, you will have a much greater chance of success. While you can spend a great deal of money on expensive commercial cleaners and stain removers, all you really need in order to remove red wine stains are a few common household products.

Instructions

    • 1

Blot the stain with a clean cloth to remove as much of the moisture as possible. Do not scrub at the stain because this could cause it to spread or become more deeply ingrained in the fabric. The sooner you are able to treat the stain after it occurs, the more likely you are to get it out.

    • 2

Pour a small amount of club soda or cold water directly onto the stain. Blot it with a cloth. As the red wine is transferred from the sofa to the cloth, rotate the portion of the cloth you are using so it is always clean. Pour on more club soda or cold water as needed.

    • 3

Combine equal parts liquid dish soap and 3-percent hydrogen peroxide. Dip a clean cloth into the mixture and use it to blot the stain. As the stain begins to lift, switch to a clean section of the cloth.

    • 4

Blot set-in or dried red wine stains with a clean cloth dipped in white vinegar.

    • 5

Create a paste by mixing three parts borax or baking soda to one part water. Spread the paste directly onto a set-in stain and allow it to dry. As the paste dries, it will absorb some of the stain, which can then be vacuumed away.
