How to Get the Pickle Juice Smell Out of a Sofa

The sofa is often the center of your entertaining area; the place where company sits and where we get comfortable to get lost in a good book or movie. An unpleasant odor trapped in the sofa can detract from all of these experiences. Pickle juice is made from vinegar, which boasts a notoriously strong odor. If enjoying pickles straight from the jar has led to a pickle juice spill and ultimately a lingering pickle juice odor on your sofa, immediate action is in order to eliminate this pungent aroma.

Paper towels
Powdered or liquid dish detergent
Sponge
Towel
Baking soda
Vacuum cleaner

Instructions

  Press paper towels onto a fresh spill to soak up as much as possible. Discard the damp paper towels immediately.

  Mix 1 to 2 teaspoons of powdered or liquid dish detergent into 1 quart of warm water.

  Dip a clean cloth or sponge into the soapy water and blot the stain with it. Use caution not to oversaturate the sofa, as this will make it harder to dry and may lead to mildew problems later.

  Rinse the area with a sponge dampened with clean water to remove leftover soap residue.

  Blot the area with a clean dry towel to remove as much moisture as possible.

  Cover the area with baking soda. The baking soda will help the area to dry quickly by absorbing the moisture and will also absorb lingering odor.

  Leave the baking soda on the sofa for at least two hours.

  Vacuum up the baking soda using a soft- to medium-bristled brush to loosen any baking soda that may have become stuck to the sofa.
