How to Get Rid of the Smell of Moth Balls on Furniture

Once a common pest repellent, mothballs contain naphthalene, which may cause a wide array of health complications. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, naphthalene is a "persistent, bio accumulative and toxic chemical" that will cause fatigue, headaches, vomiting, diarrhea and red blood cell damage when people are exposed to the chemical and its fumes for long periods of time. When your furniture absorbs a mothball odor, it becomes unpleasant, but you can remove the odor at home with a few common household supplies.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the furniture outside on a warm, sunny day for several hours. This will help air out the odor. If the furniture is too heavy to move, open the windows near the furniture for several hours.

    • 2

Mist the upholstery lightly with white vinegar and air dry for several hours. Repeat the process until the mothball odor is no longer present.

    • 3

Wipe the hard surfaces -- such as wood or plastic -- with a cloth damp with white vinegar. Let the vinegar air dry on the surface. Repeat the process until you have removed all traces of the odor.

    • 4

Fill drawers with crumbled pieces of newspapers. Leave the balls of newspapers in the furniture drawer for 24 hours to absorb odors.
