How to Clean Whitewashed Oak Cabinets

Whitewashing oak is a process of lightly adding white paint to the surface of the wood. It gives the wood, such as oak, a textured and often rustic aesthetic. Just like any furniture, whitewashed oak cabinets need occasional cleaning. Use the same techniques and cleaning products that you would to clean any painted, wooden cabinetry.

Instructions

    • 1

Empty your cabinets completely, removing all dishes and everything else.

    • 2

Vacuum all dirt and debris out of the cabinets, using the soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner. If you don’t have a soft brush attachment or vacuum cleaner, carefully remove dirt and debris with a hand brush.

    • 3

Mix 1 tablespoon of mild detergent with 1 cup of warm water.

    • 4

Moisten a lint-free cloth with the mixture and very lightly wash the inside and outside surfaces of the cabinets.

    • 5

Rinse the surfaces with a new lint-free cloth very lightly moistened with cool water.

    • 6

Mix 1 cup of distilled white vinegar, 1 cup of baking soda, 1/2 cup of ammonia and 1 gallon of warm water. Then, lightly dampen a clean lint-free cloth and gently scrub away any spots, stains or odor areas. This will remove odors, grease spots or more stubborn stains. After you have cleaned the trouble areas, go over them a second time with another clean, lint-free cloth lightly moistened with cool water.
