How to Care for a Mahogany Table

A piece of mahogany furniture adds a touch of class and elegance to your home whether it's a dining, end or coffee table. This dark, rich hardwood with a reddish cast has been used by woodworkers to craft furniture for centuries. In spite of its durability and resistance to humidity, moisture and wear and tear, mahogany wood still requires regular care to maintain its luster and keep it looking its best.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove dust from your mahogany table on a regular basis with a damp, lint-free cloth. Dust creates a dull finish on the dark mahogany wood and dims the shine. Use a clean, dry cloth to dry the piece afterward.

    • 2

Dampen a soft, dry cloth with mineral spirits to clean grease and grime from a mahogany table that has been neglected. Wear rubber gloves and keep the mineral spirits out of the reach of children. Wipe the table down with the mineral spirits until you've removed the dirt from the table.

    • 3

Treat the table with a coating of paste wax three or four times a year. While you want to provide a protective finish on the mahogany, it's important to avoid creating an unnecessary wax buildup. Use a dry cloth and work the wax into the wood with small, circular motions.

    • 4

Protect a mahogany table from direct sunlight which may fade the dark color of the wood. Keep curtains or blinds closed to prevent direct sunlight from falling on the surface of the mahogany table.

Remove excess humidity from the air by using a dehumidifier. In spite of the fact that mahogany stands up well to moisture in the air, prolonged periods of dampness can still take their toll on the furniture. Excess moisture also promotes the growth of mold and mildew on surfaces.
