How to Remove a Moldy Smell From Wood Furniture

It isn’t uncommon for older wood furniture to have a musty or even moldy odor, but this smell is an indication of the presence of mold spores. Mold is a fungal growth that attaches to dark areas where moisture is present, so if the furniture has gotten wet and didn’t dry properly, it can create a smelly problem. Eliminating this smell is simple with a small investment of time and effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove everything from the furniture if necessary, including emptying out drawers and clearing out shelves.

    • 2

Move the furniture outside to be cleaned. Set it on a tarp or on a clean area of concrete.

    • 3

Inspect the furniture thoroughly for visible signs of mold or mildew. If you encounter mold, brush it away with a soft-bristle brush.

    • 4

Dissolve 2 tablespoons of powdered laundry detergent into 1 quart of warm water.

    • 5

Dip a sponge into the solution, and wipe down the furniture with it. Don't forget to wring out the sponge so as to not oversaturate the wood.

    • 6

Rinse the furniture with a damp cloth to eliminate the soapy residue. Use clean, warm water, and wring out the cloth well.

    • 7

Mix 1/2 cup of chlorine bleach with 1 gallon of water, and use it to disinfect the furniture.

    • 8

Leave the furniture outside to air-dry. If it’s raining, keep the furniture in the garage or another location that is dry and cool to allow for proper ventilation. If you must keep the furniture indoors, place a fan nearby, or use a dehumidifier to help eliminate moisture from the wood.
