How to Fix a Leather Couch With Shoe Polish

It’s shiny, expensive and the pride and joy of your living room — but damage lurks around every corner. When your leather couch gets a scratch, kids and pets are the most likely culprits. But certain items of clothing you wear, such as a belt with leather prongs, can also scratch your leather couch. While you may not be able to prevent all scratches, you can render the scratch less noticeable and sometimes even invisible with the correct shade of shoe polish.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a shade of wax-based shoe polish that matches the shade of your leather couch. Wax polish is particularly good for hiding scrapes and scratches.

    • 2

Dab a clean, lint-free cloth in the polish. Pick up a small amount, roughly the size of a pea. Work the polish into the couch using a gentle, circular motion.

    • 3

Repeat the process as your cloth dries out. Continue polishing the scratch until it is no longer visible.

    • 4

Wipe excess polish from the couch with a clean cloth. Let the repaired area dry overnight.

    • 5

Apply a leather conditioner. Wax polish is good at covering scratches, but it can dry out your leather. Conditioning the leather helps prevent the scratched area from drying out and cracking.
