How To Fix Scratches on a Vinyl Sofa

Sometimes called faux, or fake, leather, vinyl is a durable and inexpensive alternative to real leather. However, pet nails, writing instruments and other everyday objects can scratch a vinyl sofa. If not dealt with in a timely manner, these scratches will worsen over time. Furniture restorers can repair the scratches; however, these companies are rather expensive, and you have to drag the sofa down to the repair site. Instead, use a leather and vinyl repair kit to fix scratches on a vinyl sofa.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the scratched area of the vinyl sofa with a lint-free cloth damp with distilled water. Buff dry with a clean lint-free cloth.

    • 2

Wet the corner of a clean cloth with rubbing alcohol. Wipe the scratches with the cloth. Dry the area with a clean lint-free cloth.

    • 3

Cover the scratches with the repair compound included in the vinyl repair kit. Use the small spatula included in the kit to spread an even layer of the repair compound that extends 1/2 inch past the scratches.

    • 4

Rub the wet repair compound with a finger damp with water until smooth. Allow the repair compound to dry for two to four hours. Dampen a lint-free cloth with rubbing alcohol and rub the dry compound until it is completely smooth. Let dry again.

    • 5

Apply the clear coat over the dried compound and let it dry for two to four hours. You may need several applications of the clear coat to achieve the desired results. Let the clear coat dry completely between each coat.

    • 6

Clean and condition the entire vinyl sofa as you normally would.
