How to Correct Wood Furniture From a Perfume Spill

Two issues occur when perfume spills on wood furniture. First, the odor seeps into the furniture, leaving a strong perfume smell. More worrisome, though, is the alcohol in the perfume that can damage the finish of wood furniture. Act quickly to minimize damage. If the spill was small, a few simple household products will repair any stains. If the spill was large or allowed to sit, though, you may have to refinish the furniture.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper towels or clean cloths
  • Paste wax
  • Ammonia
  • 1/4 cup rottenstone
  • 3 tablespoons lemon oil or boiled linseed oil

Instructions

    • 1

Blot up the spill immediately with paper towels or a clean cloth. Blot gently, but don't rub, which will spread the alcohol and increase the damage.

    • 2

Apply a small amount of paste wax to the damaged area with a soft cloth and rub. The paste wax smooths and hides minor stains.

    • 3

Dab a few drops of household ammonia on a clean cloth and wipe quickly across the stain if the paste wax alone was not sufficient. Wipe the area dry and apply more paste wax.

    • 4

Make a mildly abrasive paste if the perfume was allowed to sit on the furniture and the damage is more severe. Mix rottenstone with lemon oil or boiled linseed oil to make a smooth paste.

Apply the paste to the damaged area and rub it in the direction of the grain. Wipe the paste away with a clean cloth and apply wax.
