How to Destatic a Couch

If you've ever shuffled across the floor toward your favorite couch and received an eye-opening zap when you sat down, then you understand the irritation of static electricity. Static charges occur when electrons transfer from one object to another. The pop that you feel isn't terribly painful, but it is annoying. Reducing static in your couch will make this piece of furniture a more comfortable place to relax.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray your couch with an anti-static laundry spray. Hold the spray at least 2 feet from the couch when you spray the area so that you don't stain your couch. Spraying from a close distance concentrates the liquid over a small area and may wet the couch visibly, possibly leaving a stain.

    • 2

Rub dryer sheets on the cushions, arms and back of your couch. Dryer sheets contain positively charged particles that help to neutralize negatively charged particles on the fabric.

    • 3

Turn on a humidifier to add moisture to the air. Dry air increases the likelihood of static electricity.

    • 4

Cover synthetic upholstery with a cotton slipcover. Natural material fibers, such as cotton, are less likely to conduct static charges.
