How to Clean Wood Lacquer

Wood that has been finished with lacquer can be a bit tricky to clean because it is a somewhat delicate wood finish. This is particularly true of older lacquer finishes, which are not as durable or water-resistant as today's lacquer products. If possible, it is best to avoid exposing lacquered wood to moisture and stick to dry cleaning methods. However, if absolutely necessary, you can use liquid cleaning methods if you take the proper precautions.

Instructions

    • 1

Dust the lacquered wood regularly with a clean, soft cotton cloth, wiping with the grain of the wood.

    • 2

Mix a few drops of mild dishwashing detergent with warm water. Dip a cloth into the solution and wring the cloth thoroughly. Wipe the lacquered wood with the cloth.

    • 3

Wipe the wood with a dry cloth immediately after wiping with the wet, soapy cloth. Never leave moisture sitting on lacquered wood -- this can create water spots and damage the finish.

    • 4

Buff the lacquered wood with a microfiber polishing cloth and a small amount of furniture polish containing lemon or orange oil. Do not use oil-based products on your lacquer finish if the finish is less than 6 months old.
