How to Get Scratches Out of Acrylic Furniture

One of the best things about acrylic furniture is its ease of care -- it's waterproof and lightweight, and spills wipe away easily. It's also more durable than the glass it often visually emulates, but it's not impervious, especially to the occasional scuff or scratch. If you have scratches in your acrylic furniture, it takes some work to remove them, but a scratch-free, shiny surface is possible.

  • Mild abrasive plastic polish
  • 150-grit sandpaper
  • 400-grit sandpaper

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the scratched acrylic with a soft cloth moistened with acrylic cleaner or liquid dish soap and water. Wipe the acrylic dry.

    • 2

Apply a dime-sized drop of mildly abrasive plastic polish on a soft cloth. Rub the area in a circular motion to remove minor scuffs and scratches, then wipe the residue away with a clean soft cloth.

    • 3

Sand scratches that are too deep to be removed with plastic polish. Start with 150-grit sandpaper and spot-sand the area or areas until the scratches are gone. The spot will be rough.

    • 4

Rub 400-grit sandpaper over the spot, followed by 600-grit sandpaper. The spot should be smooth now, but still dull.

    • 5

Attach a buffing wheel to a drill or rotary tool. Turn on the tool to the lowest speed, and touch the buffing wheel to buffing compound to pick up a small amount. Buff the spot with the buffing wheel, moving in a circular motion, until the spot shines. Wipe away any remaining buffing compound with a damp soft cloth.
