What Do You Use to Clean an Antique Chair That Is Varnished?

Microfiber Washcloth

• Dust builds up on the surface of an antique wood chair over time. The chair needs protection from dust to keep the wood in good condition. The dust also needs to be removed before you can thoroughly clean the wood. Instead of soaking the chair with water, which can damage the wood, dust the furniture with a lint-free microfiber washcloth. Wipe the washcloth over the entire surface of the chair at least two to three times a week.

Soap

• When you need to remove a buildup of dirt from the antique chair, use a mild soap and water solution. The soap solution carefully breaks down dirt and will not damage the wood if you use it properly. Add two to three drops of mild liquid dish soap to a bowl of warm water and dampen a washcloth with the solution. Always wring out the excess water so that the washcloth remains only slightly damp. Rinse the chair with a washcloth and clean water. Dry the chair immediately with a microfiber washcloth so that water does not remain on the surface.

Paste Wax

• Purchase paste wax that matches the varnish. Paste wax is available in either beeswax or carnauba wax. The waxes are available in different shades that blend with the wood. If you are unsure about which type of paste wax to purchase, consult an antique professional or wood expert. Before you apply the wax, always read the instructions carefully to protect the varnish. Rub a light coat of the wax onto a microfiber washcloth in the direction of the wood's grain. After you apply the wax, buff it with a dry washcloth to harden the wax. Buffing the wax also prevents streaks and smudges from appearing.

Antique Furniture Care

• Cleaning the antique chair properly protects it from damage. Before you apply a cleaning treatment, test it on a small and hidden area on the chair to ensure that it will not blemish the varnish. Aerosol waxes and liquid polishes can damage the look of antique furniture. Do not use these waxes often because they will make the finish look glossy and leave behind a buildup of silicone, which can make refinishing the furniture difficult. When you store the wood chair, always place it in an area away from extreme humidity, heat or direct sunlight to prevent cracks from forming.
