How to Remove Scratches From Concrete Countertops

Concrete countertops provide a durable, inexpensive alternative to other types of stone, including limestone, marble and travertine. The concrete material is formed and molded into almost any shape and then tinted to match your kitchen’s décor. Unfortunately, as with other types of material, concrete is not impervious to scratches. Superficial scratches generally occur in the concrete’s sealant and not the countertop itself. Repair the sealant scratch without the need for expensive equipment.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 tsp. mild dish soap
  • 4 cups lukewarm water
  • Soft cloths
  • Acrylic single-component sealant
  • Fine-tipped paintbrush or spotter brush
  • Fine-grit sandpaper
  • Tack cloth

Instructions

    • 1

Create a mixture of 1 tablespoon mild liquid dish soap and 4 cups lukewarm water. Stir the water to incorporate the mild dish soap, which doesn’t contain dyes or perfumes.

    • 2

Dampen a soft cloth with the soapy mixture and wipe down the concrete to remove any dust, dirt and debris from its surface. Wipe away the soapy solution with a separate damp cloth.

    • 3

Dry the concrete countertop with a soft cloth. Fill in the superficial scratch with an acrylic single-component sealer. Using a fine-tipped paintbrush, preferably a spotter brush, spread the sealant inside the crack.

    • 4

Wipe down the concrete around the crack with a soft cloth to remove any excess sealant. Allow the acrylic sealant to dry for at least 2 hours or according to the package directions.

    • 5

Rub the newly filled crack gently with a fine-grit sandpaper to create a seamless finish. Wipe away the dust created by sanding with a tack cloth.
