Removing Super Glue From a Wooden Table

Super Glue, chemically referred to as cyanoacrylate, is a household favorite to repair a variety of non-porous items. It bonds items quickly and securely. It's great ... until it spills on your wooden table. Don't stare at the glob of hardened glue every time you sit down to eat. Use common household items to remove it and restore your table to new condition.

Instructions

    • 1

Dip a cotton swab into a small amount of nail polish remover with acetone. Although 100 percent acetone works well on removing Super Glue, it may be too harsh for antiques and delicate woods. Polish remover delivers a diluted strength of acetone, so is gentler on a wood surface.

    • 2

Dab at the dried Super Glue -- avoiding the clean wood beside the glue -- to soften and lift the glue. Use fresh swabs dipped in polish remover, softening and lifting the glue as you work.

    • 3

Use an ice scraper or plastic spatula to gently scrape softened glue from the wood. Reapply polish remover and remove softened glue until you can't get any more off.

    • 4

Wipe the area down with a damp cloth to remove chemical residue. Follow with a dry cloth. Proceed to sanding if is still a remnant of glue or if glue has penetrated the wood.

    • 5

Tape off the affected area with low-stick painters tape to protect the surrounding table surface from accidental scratches.

    • 6

Using a sanding block to avoid gouging the wood and 600 grit wet or dry sandpaper, sand the Super Glue spot gently until you can't see any more glue. Follow the direction of the grain to avoid unsightly scratches.

    • 7

Switch to 1200 grit paper. Feather slightly into the surrounding area to blend.

    • 8

Touch up the spot with a dab of matching stain, according to product directions.
