How to Clean a Sofa Cushion Made of Polyester Batting

Used to keep the cushioning material from sliding and shifting inside the cushion, polyester batting is a commonly used in high-quality furniture, including sofas. Over time, even the best sofas will become dirty and dingy and require a thorough cleaning. However, improper cleaning will leave the cushion looking worse than before. Fortunately, you can keep the polyester batting cushions looking their best with spot cleaning. Before you attempt to clean the sofa, always read and follow the manufacturer’s recommending cleaning process.

  • Upholstery attachment
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Microfiber cloths
  • Dry cleaning solvent or dish soap

      Attach an upholstery attachment to a vacuum cleaner's hose. Turn on the vacuum and run the brush over the entire sofa. Repeat this step once a week to keep surface debris off the sofa.

      Saturate a microfiber cloth with dry-cleaning solve if the sofa’s label has an S or SW cleaning code. If the cleaning code is a W, use a solution of 1/4 cup dish soap mixed with 1 gallon of water. If the label has an X, you should only clean it by vacuuming and never use solvent or water-based products.

      Rub stains gently with the damp cloth until they are no longer present. Blot the area with a clean, microfiber cloth damp with cold water to remove the cleaning solution. Pat the couch dry.

      Mist the sofa cushions with undiluted white vinegar or a commercial odor remover to get rid of unwanted smells on the upholstery.
