How to Fix Cracks in Lacquer Furniture

Lacquer furniture has a thick coating of glossy lacquer applied over the wood. The lacquer protects the wood while providing a sheen. Extreme heat and cold may lead to cracks in the lacquered surface. Furniture polish and waxes may get caught in the small cracks, making them appear white. Repair the cracks without damaging the wood beneath to improve the appearance of your lacquered furniture.

Instructions

    • 1

Dampen a soft cloth with acetone, which is available at paint and hardware stores.

    • 2

Rub the cloth over the cracked area in a circular motion. Rub with gentle pressure just until the lacquer dissolves, which takes about 30 seconds.

    • 3

Patch the wood with a wood repair crayon, or stain stick, if the finish faded during the lacquer removal. Rub the crayon over the exposed wood. Use a crayon that matches the color of your stain.

    • 4

Apply a fresh coat of clear lacquer. Allow it to dry completely. Add a second coat if necessary. Allow the lacquer to dry for 24 hours.

    • 5

Buff the entire piece of furniture with a wood wax. The wax provides a protective coating and helps blend the repaired area into the surrounding wood.
