How to Fix Marks in a Laminate Table Top

Laminate tabletops combine long-lasting durability with aesthetic appeal to provide practical eating surfaces in homes. Although extremely hard, laminate table tops are not completely impervious to damages. Burns from hot items and chips from sharp objects create unappealing marks in laminate table top surfaces. While chips and minor burns marks are repairable, severe burns are generally impossible to fix without permanently disfiguring the table top. Fortunately, some techniques may help fix chips and minor burns in laminate tabletops.

  • Dishcloths
  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Soft towels
  • Two-part epoxy glue kit
  • Coffee can lid
  • 2 flat wooden sticks
  • Baking soda or other mild abrasive cleanser

Instructions

  1. Chip Marks

    • 1

      Clean the chipped laminate before repairing it. Dampen a dishcloth with water and a small drop of dishwashing liquid.

      Wipe the chipped laminate with the soapy cloth. Clean all grime out of the chipped mark on the tabletop.

      Moisten another dishcloth with water. Wipe the soapy residue off the chipped area, thoroughly rinsing the table top.

      Dry the chipped laminate with a soft towel.

      Acquire a two-part epoxy glue kit. Squeeze equal amounts of both parts onto a coffee can lid.

      Mix the epoxy glue parts together with a flat wooden stick. Using the wooden stick, fill the chip mark with the mixed epoxy glue.

      Scrape excess glue off the chipped laminate using a clean stick.

      Let the repaired laminate cure for 24 hours before using the tabletop.

    Burn Marks

      Clean the burnt laminate before repairing it. Dampen a dishcloth with water and a small drop of dishwashing liquid.

      Wipe the burnt laminate with the soapy cloth. Clean all grime off the burnt mark on the table top.

      Dampen another dishcloth with water. Wipe the soapy residue off the burnt area, thoroughly rinsing the table top.

      Moisten a fresh dishcloth with water. Sprinkle baking soda or another mild abrasive cleanser generously onto the dishcloth.

      Scrub the marked laminate with the baking soda to lift the burn. Remove as much charred residue as possible.

      Dampen another dishcloth with water. Wipe the laminate tabletop to rinse off the baking soda.

      Dry the laminate tabletop with a clean towel.
