How to Replace Couch Cushions With Memory Foam

After several years, couch cushions wear out and fail to give comfortable support. Purchasing a new couch is expensive and time-consuming. However, you can repair your old couch cushions by inserting new memory foam to bring it back to its former glory. Memory foam is a polyurethane-based material that provides comfortable support because of its pressure-reducing properties. You can purchase precut inserts to match the shape of your cushions at most fine bedding stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length, width and depth of your couch cushions, and note them on paper. Visit a bedding store, and purchase precut memory foam that matches your cushion's dimensions.

    • 2

Open the couch cushions. Your cushion should be secured by either a zipper or stitching. If your cushions are stitched, release the threading with a seam ripper.

    • 3

Remove the old foam or stuffing. You can throw it away or save the foam for future craft projects.

    • 4

Insert the memory foam into the cushion casing. Zip up the cushion if it has a zipper. If you released the threading with a seam ripper, make a 1/2-inch fold of the upholstery material and secure it with pins spaced 2 inches apart. Stitch the edge with a thread and needle to fully secure the new memory foam insert. Place the cushions on the couch.
