How to Repaint a Spindle Chair

Repainting a spindle chair will completely rejuvenate the piece of furniture without breaking your budget. Before you can repaint a spindle chair, you must first repair the surface. However, this may be a bit difficult, and improper preparation will leave the chair looking worse than before. Because these types of chairs feature several spindles, you must pay special attention to the spindles, as well as the area around them when preparing and painting the chair.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe the surface debris off the spindle chair with a damp cloth. Let the chair air-dry. Place the chair on top of a drop cloth in a well-ventilated area. Put on a pair of chemical-resistant rubber gloves to protect your skin from irritation.

    • 2

Pour paint stripper into a plastic paint tray. Dip a paintbrush in the stripper and hold the brush over the tray for several seconds to let the excess chemical drip off the bristles.

    • 3

Brush a heavy layer of the chemical remover around the cracks of the spindles. Wait 20 minutes before scraping the softened paint off the hard-to-reach areas of the spindles with a paint scraper. Repeat this process if any paint remains.

    • 4

Brush the chemical paint remover on all sides of the spindles until completely covered. Leave the paint stripper on for 20 minutes and scrape off with a paint scraper. Repeat the process if any paint remains.

    • 5

Sit one of the chair legs in a short container. This container will catch the excess stripper that runs down the legs of the chair. Brush the stripper on the leg, and wait 20 minutes before removing the stripper and paint with a paint scraper.

    • 6

Repeat Step 5 on the remaining chair legs. Continue to apply the paint stripper to the remaining areas of the chair. Wait 20 minutes and scrape the paint off with a paint scraper. If needed, continue applying the chemical paint remover until you have removed all traces of the paint.

    • 7

Mix a quarter cup of TSP -- also called trisodium phosphate -- with 1 gallon of lukewarm water. Dampen a sponge in the mixture and wash the entire spindle chair to remove the paint remover residue. Rinse the chair with a water hose and allow it to air-dry for several hours.

    • 8

Pour the desired paint in a clean paint tray. Dip a clean paintbrush in the paint and remove the excess paint by wiping both sides of the brush on the edge of the tray.

    • 9

Apply the paint to the area where the spindles meet the chair. Paint the remaining area of the spindles. Continue painting the chair, working from the top to the bottom until you have covered the entire chair. Let the paint dry for several hours.

    • 10

Repeat Steps 8 and 9 if the chair requires another coat of paint.
