The texture of your microfiber couch may have changed for a few reasons. Some microfiber couches are washable, as indicated by a "W" on the care label tag found on the cushions, while others are not. If you washed a microfiber couch that wasn't washable, the texture may change because the fibers have absorbed water, detergent or fabric softener. Even worse, the dryer may have shrunk or melted the fibers.
Occasionally, the texture may appear hard, crunchy or slightly knobby after washing microfiber furniture. Brush the furniture gently with a soft brush to restore its suppleness. As the couch is used, the upholstery will soften, perhaps to its original appearance.
Texture changes won't generally impact the durability or life of the sofa, and in most cases, are only noticeable by you. The convenience of being able to wash a microfiber couch may outweigh the fact that the texture has changed -- especially if you have children or pets.
To prevent problems in the future, always read the care label guide before cleaning microfiber upholstery. A tag with the label "W" can be cleaned with water-based solutions, while a tag with the label "S" must be cleaned with solvents. Try any cleaning products in an inconspicuous area first. Have the couch professionally cleaned at least once a year and vacuum it weekly to prevent soil from building up. Blot up any spills immediately. Even though microfiber is stain resistant, liquids eventually absorb into the material over time.
