How to Redo Metal Chairs

Updating your metal chairs makes them look brand new. Chipping paint and finishes ruin the look of metal furniture, especially if rust forms on the exposed areas. Re-doing the chairs requires only a minimal financial investment but it does take effort and time to do it correctly. Products and methods used for outdoor furniture work best on metal furnishings, whether you are re-doing the furniture for patio use or to furnish an interior area.

Instructions

    • 1

Combine ¼ cup heavy duty detergent with 1 gallon of warm water. Place the mixture in a bucket.

    • 2

Scrub the chairs with the detergent solution. Use a nylon brush to scrub the metal surface and an old toothbrush to clean out any grooves in the metal.

    • 3

Rub the rust spots and paint from the furniture with a fine grit steel wool, using a circular buffing movement. Use a small wire brush to remove rust from inside any grooves. Wipe paint thinner over stubborn flecks of paint to loosen them, then scrub again with the steel wool.

    • 4

Rinse the chairs with clear water to remove any remaining detergent or rust residue. Wipe the furniture frame dry.

    • 5

Paint the chairs with a rust-resistant primer made for metal application. Use a paint brush to paint an even coat over the entire furniture frame. Use a smaller brush to get the primer into any grooves. Allow the primer coat to dry completely for 12 to 14 hours.

Apply a final coat of paint in the desired color. Use a paint formulated for use on outdoor or metal furniture to ensure the best longevity of the restoration. Allow the paint to dry for 24 hours before using the furniture.
