How to Fix a Puncture in a Vinyl Sofa

A vinyl couch is an inexpensive alternative to real leather, but it tends to have one downside: Vinyl can tear when confronted with animal claws or other sharp objects. Over time, the tears can become larger and harder to repair. Fix small punctures and holes right away to prevent bigger problems in the future. Your couch will look as good as new with a little bit of work.

Use a vinyl repair kit to fix very small punctures. A kit that doesn't use heat is simple to use. Clean the area where the tear is using a soft cloth and undiluted white vinegar. After the vinegar dries, apply the liquid compound in the color that closely matches your own vinyl, or mix up a color that matches the sofa using the colors provided. Press the paper that matches the grain of your vinyl onto the wet compound, and allow the spot to dry for 24 hours.

Cut a piece of vinyl from the back or underside of your couch that matches the tear. Alternately, pick up a swatch of vinyl that matches from a fabric or craft store. Cut it to fit the tear. Poke the vinyl patch into the tear using the dull side of scissors if needed. Arrange the vinyl to cover the hole, then add a few drops of vinyl glue to the edges of the tear. Glue the edges to the patch, and let it dry.

Sew the puncture together using a small needle and upholstery thread that matches the sofa. This works well for a tear that's on the flat part of the cushion and isn't easily visible. The stitches will be seen, but it's a temporary solution until you can get the sofa professionally reupholstered. Use small stitches, and pull the edges of the tear together as much as possible while you are sewing to close the puncture.
