How to Fix a Pillowtop Sag

A sagging mattress is due to either broken mattress springs or failure of the cushy layers within the mattress to remain firm. A pillowtop mattress offers an extra layer of padding on top of the mattress for additional support and cushioning, and this layer can begin to sag if one side of the mattress is used more often or heavy objects are consistently placed on one side or area of the mattress. You can keep your pillowtop mattress from sagging through preventative care so it remains viable for a long time to come.

Remove the entire mattress from the bed frame then place a board between the springs and the mattress if the springs are part of the bed frame, such as with day beds. The board helps support the sagging mattress. Beds that feature a separate box spring that is not part of the bed frame generally cannot be fixed and must be replaced.

Place thick towels or comforters between the pillowtop and the rest of the mattress to even out the mattress and provide support. Lie down on your mattress to test for comfort and adjust the towels or comforter as needed. Thin, flat pillows can be used as an alternative to towels and comforters.

Rotate your pillowtop mattress once a month to help prevent sagging in a particular area. Move the mattress so the "head" of the mattress is now the "feet" and vice versa. If there is a pillowtop on both sides, flip the mattress over monthly as well, especially if you favor one side of the mattress.

Sleep on different sides of the mattress each night or every two or three nights to avoid sagging on one side of the mattress.
