How to Repair Vinyl & Rubber

Vinyl is a synthetic material found in a range of items from wallpaper to upholstery. Rubber is another common material found in many common objects. When you have something with components made of either vinyl or rubber or both, it is frustrating if it tears or breaks. Instead of replacing your objects, repair them.

Instructions

  1. Vinyl Repair

    • 1

Turn a clothing iron to the high setting and let it heat up for five minutes.

    • 2

Mix a batch of repair compound that comes with your kit. Select the color that most closely matches the vinyl you are repairing.

    • 3

Cut a piece of backing fabric that comes with your kit. Insert the fabric into the ripped vinyl underneath the damaged area.

    • 4

Spread the vinyl repair compound with a small spatula, smoothing it over the damaged area’s surface.

    • 5

Select a piece of grain paper from your kit that most closely matches the vinyl object’s texture. Stick it into the repair compound’s center.

    • 6

Hold the metal tip of the heat transfer tool that comes with your kit to the end for three to four minutes.

    • 7

Press the heat transfer tool onto the grain paper and move it around in a circular motion for approximately two minutes. Let the grain paper cool, and then peel off slowly to complete the repair job.

    Rubber Repair

    • 8

Clean the cracked or broken area of rubber with soap and water removing any debris.

    • 9

Sand the rubber around the crack with fine-grit sandpaper. This roughens the surface.

    • 10

Cut a PVC patch that’s large enough to cover the rubber’s cracked area.

    • 11

Spread a silicone glue coating on both the cracked rubber piece and on the PVC patch. Press the patch to the rubber, making it smooth. Let the glue dry overnight before handling.
