How to Get Scratches Out of Leather Chairs

The smooth, stylish look of leather chairs adds a touch of class to any room -- class that sometimes fades with daily use. While restoring lost luster and wiping the occasional stain off leather isn't too difficult, scratches are a different story. Errant keys and the toenails of beloved pets can leave your prized furniture crisscrossed with a maze of discolored lines. Deeper marks require the attention of restoration professionals, but you can get light surface scratches out of leather chairs relatively easily on your own.

Things You'll Need

  • Olive oil
  • Cotton cloth
  • Hair dryer

Instructions

    • 1

Dribble a few drops of olive oil onto a cotton cloth. Avoid saturating the cloth.

    • 2

Rub the oil-drizzled cloth over the scratched leather gently in small, circular motions. Continue until the oil coats the entire area and the scratch disappears.

    • 3

Let the oil dry. Examine the leather for signs of any remaining scratches.

    • 4

Turn a hair dryer onto its lowest heat setting if any scratches remain. Point the hair dryer at the scratch until the leather is warmed but not too hot to touch. Stop heating the chair if the leather gets too warm.

    • 5

Massage and knead the scratched leather with your hand. Work the leather until the deeper dyes rise to the surface and return color to the scratch.

    • 6

Call a leather restoration specialist if the chair is scratched so deeply that these steps fail to remedy the mark.
