How to Install 3M Film

3M films are designed to reduce the amount of heat or cool air escaping a house during the winter or summer months, which makes the house energy-efficient. The film can be clear or slightly tinted. 3M strongly recommends that a professional complete the film installation to get the most out of the product. If you decide to install 3M film yourself, make sure you prepare well in advance and are able to obtain the appropriate tools for the job.

Things You'll Need

  • Towels or drop cloths
  • Dish soap
  • Water
  • Razor scraper
  • Squeegee
  • Sharp knife
  • Blade or trimming tool

Instructions

    • 1

Place old towels or drop cloths near the windows where you are installing the 3M film.

    • 2

Wash the windows and the window frame with a mild solution of dish soap and water to remove all traces of dust and grime. Use a razor scraper to clean the edges under the frame. Dry completely using a clean towel.

    • 3

Remove the release liner that is applied on the adhesive of the 3M film to protect it from dust. Start applying the film to the windows smoothly in one step, so that it does not form wrinkles or lines. Work in small sections if necessary to ensure smooth application.

    • 4

Use a squeegee, which works like a small hard mop, to smooth the film all over the window. The smoothing action of the squeegee also removes excess water that might be present under the film.

    • 5

Trim excess film from the sides near the frame to fit the glass. Cut in one smooth sharp line to prevent ragged edges that could be detrimental to the film's effectiveness in keeping warm or cool air inside the house. Use the squeegee again to remove all traces of excess water so that the film can cure faster and remain stuck to the window glass. Curing allows the film to become smooth and transparent instead of appearing warped and bubbly.

Seal the edges of the installed film by using a towel wrapped over the trimming tool or knife. This will prevent debris from getting under the film and reducing its effectiveness.
