How to Care for Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam mattresses effectively bring comfort and relieve back and joint pain while you sleep. These mattresses, typically made out of a resilient, visco-elastic polyurethane material, conform to your contours by reacting to the warmth of your body. This relieves various uncomfortable pressures on parts of your body. Follow these basic care instructions to ensure the functionality and longevity of your memory foam mattress.

Things You'll Need

  • Mild, bleach-free laundry detergent
  • Spray bottle
  • Vacuum hose attachment
  • Fan

Instructions

    • 1

Carefully pull apart the seams to open the packaging of a new memory foam mattress. Do not use a knife or scissors to open the tightly compressed plastic package or you will puncture the mattress inside.

    • 2

Leave the mattress rolled up and let it sit for 1 to 2 hours to relax and adjust to the temperature.

    • 3

Unfold the mattress. Let the unfolded mattress sit for 1 to 2 days to fully relax and take shape. Your new mattress may have a chemical odor. Air out and remove the odor by placing the mattress near a fan or open window.

    • 4

Rotate (don’t flip) your mattress 2 or 3 times a week for the first month you use it. Rotate your mattress 2 or 3 times a month thereafter.

    • 5

Clean your mattress by vacuuming debris with a vacuum hose and by spot cleaning it with water and a mild, bleach-free detergent. Spray soapy water on with a spray bottle. Use 1 part detergent to 2 parts warm water. Blot the mattress with a clean cloth.
