How Do I Rotate a Mattress?

People rotate their tires as a part of routine maintenance on their vehicles, but they often do not think about rotating their matresses. Mattresses need maintenance just like vehicles, or they will wear out faster. Many people do not even think about rotating their mattresses; the mattress set is taken home, placed on the frame, and there it stays. A few short years later, the mattress is not as comfortable as it was when you first bought it. You can extend your mattress life by setting a regular schedule of mattress maintenance.

  1. Purpose

    • Mattresses are like couch or chair cushions. WIth repeated use, the cushions begin to wear and flatten out. This would not happen as quickly if the cushions were periodically rotated and turned over. It is the same with mattresses. Your body weight will eventually create weaker areas in your mattress if it is never rotated. This is one of the main reasons that your mattress becomes uncomfortable.

    First 90 Days

    • Your rotating schedule is completed more often when you first purchase a new mattress set. The ideal schedule is to rotate your mattress twice a month for the first 90 days. You will only need to rotate your mattress once a month after the initial 90 days.

    Head to Foot

    • The first time you rotate your mattress, move the head to the foot. Remove your blankets and top sheet; it is not necessary to remove your fitted sheet. Take hold of the end of the mattress, and pull it toward you until the mattress is halfway turned. Push the mattress until the foot of the bed has now become the top.

    Flipping

    • You can also flip or turn your mattress over if it is the same on the other side. Some mattresses cannot be flipped over. Remove all your bedding, and set it aside. Turn your mattress clockwise until it is laying sideways across the box springs. Raise the side of the mattress up, and flip it over to its opposite side. Continue pushing the mattress counterclockwise until it is lined up with the box springs. Turn the mattress counterclockwise the next time you flip it over. By truning the mattress counterclockwise, you will also be rotating ends from head to foot.
