How to Care for a New Leather Couch

Leather furniture adds comfort and style to your home, but it doesn't come cheap. This makes it especially important to care for it properly. Although leather is a durable fabric, it is not damage-proof. Protect your investment by cleaning and maintaining your new leather couch the right way so you can enjoy its beauty and comfort for many years to come. Caring for leather doesn't require a lot of time; just a few precautions to ensure it remains intact.

Things You'll Need

  • Leather conditioner
  • Soft cloths
  • Leather cleaner
  • Mild soap

Instructions

    • 1

Place the leather couch in an area that isn't exposed to direct sunlight. If you have it near a window, put blinds or curtains up so the sun isn't beating directly onto the leather. Excessive exposure to sunlight can fade the leather. Also, place the couch at least two feet away from direct heat sources.

Apply a leather conditioner to your couch when you get it home and twice a year thereafter. Use a soft cloth and high-quality leather conditioner. Follow the instructions on the leather conditioner for how to apply the product.

    • 3

Dust off the couch frequently with a dry cloth. At least once a month or as needed, wipe down the couch with a slightly damp cloth. Alternatively, use a commercial leather cleaner to clean the couch as needed.

    • 4

Keep sharp objects off of the couch. Leather can be easily marred, punctured or cut so avoid leaving scissors or other sharp objects sitting on the couch. Avoid sitting newspapers or magazines on the couch as well since the ink can transfer onto the leather.

    • 5

Spot clean spills and stains from your leather couch promptly. Blot up liquids with a soft cloth, then clean the spot with a sponge slightly dampened with a mixture of equal parts mild soap and distilled water. Always blot while cleaning and never wipe. Rinse the area well with clean water and dry thoroughly.
