How to Take the Smell Out of a Mattress

It's near impossible to get a good night of rest when the smell of your mattress drives you to distraction. An unpleasant-smelling mattress can make your entire bedroom stink. Pets with wet fur, smoking in bed and late night snack spills can all result in a smelly mattress. For a cleaner and fresher smelling mattress, there are just a few things you need to do.

Things You'll Need

  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Laundry or dish detergent
  • Eggbeater
  • Cloth or sponge
  • Oscillating fan
  • Baking soda

Instructions

    • 1

Vacuum both sides of the mattress with a hand-held vacuum or the brush attachment of your upright vacuum. This helps to eliminate dust and dirt particles.

    • 2

Mix 1 tsp. of dish or laundry detergent into a cup of warm water with an eggbeater to create suds.

    • 3

Dip a clean cloth or sponge into the suds only and wipe away stains from your mattress.

    • 4

Take the mattress outside and lay it on a blanket to allow it to air dry in the sunshine. Sunlight is highly effective for eliminating odors. Use an oscillating fan to dry your mattress if the weather isn't working with you.

    • 5

Bring the mattress back inside if it was sunbathing and sprinkle baking soda all over it.

    • 6

Allow the baking soda to remain on the mattress for at least four hours, though overnight is optimal, and vacuum it up.
