How to Get Rid of Sour Smells in a Couch

Pet odors and food stains can set into a couch's upholstery, creating a sour smell that permeates the room. When this happens, certain commercial deodorizers do little to actually remove the sour smell. Instead, they cover it up briefly. Cook up your own effective furniture deodorizer with natural ingredients to eliminate both pet and food smells.

Things You'll Need

  • Dried fennel
  • Dried rosemary
  • Dried mint
  • Dried wormwood
  • Dish
  • Distilled water
  • Cooking pot
  • Strainer
  • Spray bottle
  • Sodium bicarbonate
  • Eucalyptus oil
  • Thyme oil
  • Tea-tree essential oil

Instructions

    • 1

Put 1 tsp. each of dried fennel, rosemary, mint and wormwood into a dish. Boil 7 oz. distilled water in a cooking pot and pour onto the dried herbs in the dish. Let the herbs soak in the boiled water for 10 to 15 minutes.

Strain the herb mixture into a spray bottle. Pour 1 tsp. sodium bicarbonate into the bottle. Add 1/2 tsp. eucalyptus oil, 1/2 tsp. thyme oil, 1/2 tsp. tea-tree essential oil to the mixture. Shake the bottle until mixed well.

Mist your couch lightly with the solution; do not soak the couch. The deodorizer will remove sour food and pet smells from your couch and any other furnishings.
